Everything was late. The mix was late for the five-o’clock airtime, the band was late for the sound check, and live mix staff members were late for class. Everyone was running around making sure everything was set under the time constraint, but Kirsten Price did not seem to be under the pressure. Instead, her smiles and hearty laughs reflected how excited she was to get her sound out on radio.
Once all the staff got to sit down and breathe after the band went on air, it was Price’s turn to jump up and down, shaking the studio inside and out. Her powerful yet emotional vocals differed so much from her calm and relaxing speaking voice. Her haunting voice was the perfect medium for the lyrics that conveyed everyday emotions and feelings, and when such a small band could sound empty from time to time, Price’s fierce vocals filled up every musical crease the band might have had.
“It’s terribly hard to be objective about your sound,” Price said when I asked how she would describe her sound. “… [my music] is soul-infused, it’s continuously changing, there are a lot of different influences, but I just kind of do what I do, whatever comes naturally.”
It would not be an exaggeration even if I called the British singer Kirsten Price a rebel. Even before her debut album was released, the mainstream music industry smothered her with love calls. However, after working with a few big-name producers and participating in major TV show soundtracks, Price decided to release her debut album Guts & Garbage with her own independent record label.
“I’m just going to keep doing what we’re doing,” Price said. “I’m just going to keep going, try to do the slow burn, and head to the long term career and do what I love rather than anything else, or anything the society or the industry expects of me.”
Kirsten Price and her band are now traveling the U.S. with their “Tough Times Tour.” There are neither roadies nor a tour manager, but Price and her band mates enjoy the excessive driving in a jammed van – anything to get their music out there. Price is currently working on her new album that will be released later in the year.
